One of the most rewarding activities I do as a photographer (and trust me, they are ALL rewarding! ) is capturing images of the hopeful hearts cared for by animal rescue organizations. In my previous life I was one of the founding members of Happy Tails Acapulco, a small animal welfare association whose mission was to create a Better World for the Animals living in that city. I know first-hand the deep need each abandoned animal has for a second chance at love and life, and how important compelling photos are in opening the hearts of potential adopters. As a new member of Hearts Speak, I am honored to be a part of this growing international network of compassionate artists helping animals. Working together creatively, we are able to save lives and promote responsible guardianship for our animal friends.
I recently had the opportunity to meet a dyamic couple who are the founders of Love, Hope, Believe Galgo Rescue, based in Northern Illinois. Travis and Amanda work tirelessly with rescue organizations in Spain to save the lives of Galgos who are among the 50,000 destined to be killed at the end of hunting season each year. Janis and Juno are two new arrivals from Spain. They are graceful dogs with explosive energy, and both are hopeful to find their forever families soon.
Leena was the first Galgo adopted by Travis and Amanda, and the inspiration behind the creation of Love, Hope, Believe Galgo Rescue. She is an elegant presence in their growing family; slowly shedding her timid doe-like nature and transforming into a trusting, affectionate companion. Travis and Amanda share her story:
"She is a survivor. At the end of the hunting season the Galguero that owned her in Spain no longer wanted her. This meant she was to be hung from a tree. As the Galguero prepared the wire to hang Leena, a woman passing by knew what was about to happen. The woman pleaded with the Galguero to let her take Leena and not to hang her. She finally convinced the Galguero to let her take Leena."
